I LOVE THURSDAYS
Can I let you in on a little secret? Thursdays are my favorite day of the week! I love Thursdays because it is ALMOST Friday but not quite yet, so everyone is still in work mode but not 100% invested so they are productively cheerful. Secondly for us, Thursdays are also TRASH DAY and I absolutely love trash day. All the trash from our house of nine people gets picked up and the saintly garbage men take it away. It's like heaven. But my FAVORITE thing about Thursdays are that Thursdays are the days on this blog which I have dedicated to "How it's Made", I get to stay up late at night watching videos on how cool things are made! I love Thursdays, and I LOVE what I do.
IT'S IMPORTANT TO ME
It's important to me to watch these videos because I believe when we find out how things are made, we appreciate them much more. You may love your favorite jeans because they are comfortable and worn in, but until you watch a video on "How it's Made" or go to a jean factory and see for yourself, you won't necessarily appreciate them.
Maybe you have never considered all the man hours it took for your jeans to be dyed, cut, sewn, double stitched, and then riveted. Maybe you never considered the lengths women suffragettes went through in order for you to be able to wear jeans. Maybe you had never considered the utilitarian origin of jeans as workman's wear. Maybe they just looked "cool" to you so you bought them. What about the fact that 22 curious people are watching these $2,498.00 vintage 1950's Levi's jeans on eBay right now? (click here if you don't believe me)
My point?
My point is that unless you really get to know about something, you won't ever truly be able to appreciate something.
TOOTHBRUSHES
I watched this entire video with my mouth open (no pun intended, although it is kind of funny).
I wasn't just in awe of how toothbrushes were made, I was in awe of the fact SOMEONE was able to sit and invent the very machine those toothbrushes were made on. Some person was sitting at their desk and had enough wherewithal to gather their thoughts together long enough to INVENT a machine which would make a gummy handled easy to grab bristle tooth brush. A machine with an applicator arm which would insert the precise amount of nylon strands at just right time, in the right order, with the right amount of force. Some brilliant person made that -it didn't just appear out of the sky one day- while I have a hard time just remembering to brush my teeth at night. It's embarrassing! I feel like I need to go brush my teeth right now!
SUFFICE IT TO SAY
Suffice it to say, if the statement is true "Until you really get to know about something, you may never appreciate something." Then the same must also be true, "Until you get to know about someone, you may never appreciate someone."
Perhaps the bigger lesson to this entire blog about "things" isn't just in us learning how to appreciate our stuff - but more importantly about learning how to appreciate, each other.
* Grandma taught me to say "back porch" whenever referring to one's bottom. I think it's adorable.
